After a promotional event went haywire, Twitch streamer Kai Cenat has been charged with inciting riots and encouraging an illegal gathering in New York. For the second most popular streamer on Twitch, Friday’s events have legal consequences. The 21-year-old had announced on his Twitch channel with another influencer that they wanted to distribute several Playstation 5s and many vouchers over 100 US dollars to fans on Union Square, reports The Verge. As a result, a huge crowd had formed there, which the police could not initially disperse. There had been arguments and damage to property, and some people had been injured.

“We needed thousands of parents”
As The Verge summarizes, the New York police became aware of the announcement of the action even before it went viral on social networks. When the first crowds of people formed and riots broke out among them, the police sent Cenat away and declared the gathering illegal. However, many of the young people present did not obey the requests, and some attacked the police instead. The police said they had thousands of children there and needed thousands of parents. Some youngsters would even have been out with shovels and axes that they had from a nearby construction site.
The social media star’s management has since apologized for the incident. We are deeply dismayed by the behavior “which affected innocent people and companies” and do not condone quotes Variety a statement. We fully cooperate with local authorities and recognize that as our audience grows, so does the responsibility we bear. Cenat currently has more than 86,000 paying subscribers on Twitch, in March he has laut TwitchTracker thus setting an all-time record on the platform. He is now scheduled to appear in court in New York on August 18, according to the AP.
