Brussels, June 20 (EFE).- The interactive live video streaming service Twitch joined the Code of Conduct of the European Union (EU) and became the twelfth company associated with the twenty-seven that combat illegal hate speech online, as reported on Monday by the European Commission (EC).
Shortly after joining this year’s EU Code of Practice on disinformation, Twitch took the plunge and joined the list of partners committed to the EU Code of Conduct, including companies such as Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and LinkedIn.
The EC Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová, declared that “it is good news that Twitch joins the common fight to make the Internet free from hate speech and make it a safer space for young people, since who are especially vulnerable to hate and abuse.”
The latest evaluation of the code indicates that information technology (ICT) companies reviewed 81% of notifications received within 24 hours and removed 62.5% of flagged content.
“This is a step in the right direction for building a safer digital space and serves as an incentive to extend the Code of Conduct to more companies” said the Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Didier Reynders.
Finally, the Commission highlighted that, beyond limiting hate speech, the EU Code of Conduct complements other initiatives related to ICT regulation, such as the Digital Services Law, which defines the responsibility of platforms with the content that is published on them. EFE
