Live streaming platforms like Twitch, Facebook Gaming, and YouTube Gaming have been hugely popular in recent years, but what goes up must come down. The proof is that these three services lost a considerable amount of audience in the last year.

What happened? Turns out live streaming platforms were down 8.06% year over year, according to figures from Steamlabs and Stream Hatchet. While the first quarter of 2021 saw 8.77 billion hours of streaming across Twitch, Facebook Gaming, and YouTube Gaming, the same period in 2022 saw only 8.061 million hours of streaming.

It is worth mentioning that of the 3 platforms, Twitch is the one that seems to be in the least trouble. We say this because it was the only one that had growth compared to the last quarter of 2021. While 5.7 billion hours of content were seen in that period, in the first quarter of 2022 6,130 hours of Twitch were consumed, which represents growth of 7.5%. This is the first time that Twitch’s audience has grown since the first quarter of 2021.

Another point to keep in mind is that Twitch is still the king of streaming platforms. To give you an idea, the Amazon platform provides 75% of the hours viewed within live streaming platforms. In fact, of the 8.061 million hours watched in the first quarter of 2021, 6.34 billion were on Twitch.

There were also fewer streamers during early 2022

Now, the audience was not the only thing that fell in this period and there were also changes in streamer issues. The thing is that in the first quarter of 2022, content creators streamed 229 hours of content, which represents an annual drop of 13.6%.

That’s not all: the number of streamers went from 12.5 million to 10.9 million during the same period. So it seems that platform decisions have caused a lot of streamers to simply abandon content creation to focus their time on other things.
