Jakarta –
Apparently a love story Seokarno and Inggit Garn still doesn’t just go smoothly. There are many obstacles that the two of them face until they finally get together. Unfortunately, after 20 years together, the two decided to separate. Then, what exactly was Soekarno’s initial meeting with Inggit Garnasih?
At the end of June 1921, Soekarno came from Surabaya to continue his education. He wants to pursue his dream as an engineer in civil engineering. Soekarno then decided to study at the Techniche Hooge School in Bandung, or now known as the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
With the help of H. Umar Said Tjokroaminoto, Soekarno was allowed to stay at the residence of Kang Uci, who was Inggit’s husband at the time. It was at this house that Soekarno met and immediately fell in love with Inggit, who was his boarding house mother.
In the book by Cindy Adams, Bung Karno said that his meeting with Inggit was like luck.
“The main luck is standing at the entrance in a semi-dark setting framed by a halo from behind. She has a small body, with a bright red flower in her bun, and a charming smile. She is the wife of Haji Sanusi, Inggit Garnasih. Oh , this woman is extraordinary, “said Bung Karno.
Apparently Inggit at that time also gave praise and first impression to Soekarno. This is contained in the novel ‘Kuantar ke Gerbang’ by KH Ramadhan.
“He wore a velvet cap, black pride and white clothes. Sufficient height. Handsome. Young people who dress, parlente,” said Inggit Garnasih.
Married
It was in that boarding house that Soekarno often confided in telling his heart’s restlessness Inggit Garnasih. For Soekarno Inggit was a wise person in providing suggestions and input. Who would have thought that togetherness would grow into love. Even Soekarno was not afraid of Kang Uci.
On the other hand, Soekarno realized that his love affair with Inggit was wrong. However, the longer Soekarno’s feelings for Inggit became more and more unstoppable. Even this feeling of love made it difficult for Bung Karno to concentrate while studying.
“At first we waited. For several months we waited and suddenly he was in my arms. Yes, that’s what happened. I kissed him. He kissed me. Then I kissed him again, and we were caught in love with each other. And all that. happened while he was still the wife of Sanusi and I was the husband of Oetari, “said Bung Karno.
With confidence, Bung Karno told Kang Uci that he was interested in Inggit, he even wanted to marry the woman who was still Kang Uci’s wife. Through wise considerations, Kang Uci finally divorced Inggit and invited her to marry Soekarno. After Inggit’s iddah period ended, Soekarno married her on March 24, 1923.
Although the age difference between the two was very far, Bung Karno was happy to marry his boarding mother. For Bung Karno, Inggit was the right woman to look after him and encourage him.
In order to support her husband’s struggle, Inggit did everything she could, especially to help the family economy. He is even willing to sell powder, herbal medicine, to sewing bra. For Inggit, he was very proud of Bung Karno’s never-ending fighting spirit.
Divorced
After all these years together, their household journey began to falter. The strength of their love was tested when Inggit accompanied Bung Karno in Bengkulu. At that time the couple accommodated a female student named Fatmawati who was Hasan Din’s daughter.
Given that Soekarno and Inggit had no children, Soekarno asked Inggit’s permission to make Fatmawati his second wife.
Inggit felt a dilemma. As a woman he does not want to share his love with other women. But as a wife, she also knew that her husband was eager to have children.
Inggit’s decision was finally unanimous. It is better to divorce than to be married.
Finally, the relationship between the two of them that has lasted 20 years cracked. Divorce is inevitable. They finally officially separated on February 29, 1942. The second divorce trial was held in Bandung and was attended by KH Mas Mansyur as the witness.
Although already divorcedBung Karno admitted that he still respected Inggit. In the book Penyambung Tongue Rakyat (People ‘s Tongue)’ works by Cindy Adams, Bung Karno said that he did not immediately forget Inggit’s services that had colored his days.
“I do not intend to get rid of you. It is my wish to establish you in the very top position and you remain the first wife, thus holding all the honor associated with this, while I, obeying religious and civil law, take a second wife in order to have offspring,” said Bung Karno, this is how this story is quoted from the book The Uncensored of Bung Karno, The Mystery of the Life of the President, written by Abraham Panumbangan.
