Ambalapuzha: Twin newborn babies died after a woman gave birth at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. Two male children of a native of Karthikapally Mahadevikad died. The incident happened after surgery. Mother’s health condition is satisfactory. The due date was said to be Wednesday. However, after the pain became severe, he underwent emergency surgery at night. Hospital Superintendent Dr. A. Abdussalam sought the report.
The medical college authorities explain as follows: The woman was admitted to the gynecology department on January 13. The first delivery was by caesarean section. The second pregnancy had two babies. Normally when there are two babies there are two placentas. Here both babies had only one placenta. This information has been informed to the woman and her relatives earlier.
The surgery was decided on the morning of the 18th as the pregnancy was past 36 weeks and there were no problems for the mother and the baby during the tests and scans. However, the previous evening, the baby was found to be motionless and a scan including Doppler revealed that the baby had only a slight heartbeat. Then, when the babies were taken out by an emergency caesarean section, one baby was red and the other was white and pale.
Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, or the transfer of blood from one baby to the other through the placenta, can occur when twins have only one placenta. Babies were given all possible medical care. The hospital has decided to conduct post-mortem on both the babies. In a note given by the hospital, the principal of the medical college, Dr. TK Suma said.
