Twin brother Piet Paulusma: ‘It is very special that he has lasted so long’ | show

Piet Paulusma was a man of Frisian traditions. ,,He was a real Frisian and skûtsjesilen also has a lot to do with the weather. He thought that was wonderful,” says Lume. That is also the reason why Piet’s twin brother joins presenter Bert Haandrikman.

It shows images of Piet over the years. “Wonderful to see”, says Lume. “That was Piet. He had a lot of passion for his work. Very driven. When I see what he has done. 36 years Omrop Fryslân, 23 years SBS and almost three more And then he also did other things during the day, such as the radio, that man was busy with his work all day.”

Despite the fact that Lume and Piet are twin brothers, they didn’t run into each other. ,,During the time when he was very fond of SBS and I had my own company, you don’t like each other much. From 27 July last year when he called me and told me that he still had six months to live, our contact became very intensive. Sunday evening at the pub and during the week at his house, at the bottom of his bar. Talking a lot.”

About that phone call, he says: ,,I couldn’t believe it at first. I didn’t know if it was right and if it was so short. But in the end it became seven months. It is very special that he has lasted so long.”

Still, things went fast in the end with the iconic weatherman. “On Thursday evening he went to the hospital for a sore foot, a leg he could not stand on. Late Friday night I got a call that he was doing very badly. And on Saturday morning he called that he wanted to say goodbye. We said goodbye to him on Saturday afternoon and later watched over with him. And he passed away on Sunday afternoon at twenty past two.”

The last goodbye was difficult, Lume says. “Because he was so medicated, I couldn’t really talk to him anymore. That was a hug and something to say and that was it.”

Piet Paulusma passed away in March of this year to the effects of cancer. His death caused a shock in the Netherlands, partly because the weatherman had never publicized the disease.
