Twenty inmates at a prison in Farafangana, in south-eastern Madagascar, were killed in a mutiny on Sunday, the justice ministry said in a statement. Several dozen prisoners revolted and attacked the guards, seizing a rifle, the ministry said.
Twenty detainees were killed in the clashes and eight seriously injured. Sixty-eight prisoners escaped, but 37 were recaptured during the day. The stolen rifle was recovered, according to the Ministry of Justice, which announced a strengthening of security in all penitentiary establishments on the Big Island.
