Twenty organizations, including the Collegiate Medical Organization, FADSP, Doctors of the World, various unions and patient associations have sent a letter to the Government. In it they ask guarantee access to the Spanish vaccine against COVID.
The organizations recall that guaranteeing access to the Spanish vaccine at the present time is “key”. However, only 10 percent of the population has been vaccinated with two doses in low-income countries. “The cause is the vaccine monopolies, which have limited production and raised prices.” All this, together with the hoarding of vaccines among countries that can pay the prices imposed by contract by pharmaceutical companies, they say.
They insist that the best strategy would be to increase production and diversify it in all regions of the world. In this way, health systems would be strengthened. In short, it is about “improving the response of all countries to global public health challenges”.
Access to the Spanish vaccine against COVID
To ensure access to the Spanish vaccine against COVID, they claim that conditions are imposed in financing contracts. The goal is to ensure that the licenses for Covid-19 vaccines developed with public money are not exclusive.
They also ask that the hipra vaccine and those developed by the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) are incorporated into C-TAP. This is the platform promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) to share knowledge and intellectual property of vaccines and other tools against Covid-19.
However, these entities recall that, for the research and development of the vaccine, millions of euros of public investment have been received. Among other items, 15 million in public aid have been obtained for phase IIb/III of clinical trials. This was announced a few months ago by the Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morat.
