Twenty mayors of the Metropolis of Lyon and the Rhône sign a platform against the burkini

This is one of the most divisive subjects in French society.

Last week, the EELV mayor of Grenoble Éric Piolle had the City Council vote on new internal regulations for the City’s swimming pools. The latter notably allows women who wish to do so to wear a burkini to go swimming.

In response, the LR president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region promised to cut all subsidies granted to the capital of the Alps. But he is not the only one to strongly criticize Éric Piolle’s decision.

This weekend, around twenty mayors of the Metropolis of Lyon and the Rhône department signed a forum in the JDD to denounce the situation. “The decision of the mayor of Grenoble to authorize the wearing of the burkini gives rise to one of those controversies which the cities led by the far left regularly gratify us“, they begin in unison accusing the Ecologists of “methodically destroy the benchmarks of our society and fracture it further“.

As local elected officials, public officials, we say it here with great force and conviction: authorizing the wearing of the burkini is an unprecedented moral capitulation.“, continue Pierre Oliver, LR mayor of the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon, and Sébastien Michel, LR mayor of Ecully.

It is the latter two who wrote this column co-signed by their counterparts, mainly on the right. They write : “At a time when Afghanistan has seen the return of the Taliban impose the wearing of the burqa for women and arouse the legitimate indignation of the whole world, how can we tolerate that elected representatives of the French Republic accept, worse, legitimize, the wearing militant clothing intended to conceal the female body for religious reasons in the public space?“.

Finally, the aediles promise to do everything “so that such measures do not plague the Lyon metropolitan area“.
