Twenty Dutch children treated for Kawasaki, eleven also had corona

That says Károly Illy, chairman of the Dutch Association for Pediatrics. He made an inventory at all Dutch hospitals.

Inflammations

Earlier this month, it appeared that at least four children treated for Kawasaki also had antibodies against the coronavirus in their blood. It is difficult to determine whether their inflammations were caused by corona.

“But if twenty children have a Kawasaki-like illness, more than half of whom have corona antibodies, we assume that there is a relationship. Not so many children have become infected with corona. But what exactly that relationship is, we don’t know, a lot of research is being done on that. “

What is Kawasaki Disease?

In Kawasaki disease, the walls of blood vessels become inflamed. This can lead to a high fever, a red tongue, swollen lips, red palms and soles, and a rash. If the blood vessels around the heart become inflamed, it can be dangerous. Kasawaki’s disease is undetectable in blood or urine and cannot be seen in photos. Doctors sum up the symptoms and then conclude whether it concerns Kawasaki. There is no cure for it, doctors treat the symptoms so that the body has a chance to heal itself.

Toddlers and preschoolers in particular get Kawasaki disease, but it is unclear how they contract it. Maybe they have a hereditary predisposition, maybe the disease is started by infection with a bacterium or a virus.

‘Some children on ic’

According to Illy, some children have been in intensive care with Kawasaki disease. They have since recovered and have left IC. Four patients were under 5 years old, the others were 5 to 18 years old.
