Twenty 4 Seven: The Untold Story of Nance’s Departure – Exclusive Interview

In these episodes we see the story of Twenty 4 Seven. A Dutch dance project that had several big hits, especially in the early 1990s. The group consists of Stacey Seedorf, Nance and Li-Ann van Groen. Twenty 4 Seven became known with the hip-hop album ‘I can’t stand it’, ‘Is it love?’ and ‘Slave to the music’. Producer Ruud van Rijen was one of the first to combine a rapper with a singer.

Despite the great success, it remained financially meager. Nance ended up behind the cash register at the time. After Stacey Seedorf joined the group and they finally reached the Dutch charts, everything accelerated. “One of the most beautiful periods,” says Stacey. But Nance experienced it differently. She got the feeling that she was being pushed more into the background. “We’ve already had success. Let me take you by the hand.” Still, she got the feeling that Stacey was increasingly taking charge, “because he wrote and had ideas.”

It bothered Nance that she was constantly surrounded by only men. “I felt very alone. Very misunderstood. By the people I trusted the most,” says Nance emotionally. “Also by colleagues. I sometimes notice that I am jealous of other groups.” Manager Charly Prick also admits that it was his fault that he ‘didn’t communicate enough’ with her.

In Ruud’s experience, the biggest cracks arose ‘because Nance could not express himself to the two men. She was constantly on the road with Stacey and Charly. Nance continues: “You are close to each other day and night. That was very nice in the beginning. But we are not a 100% match.”

At one point it was announced that Nance is no longer part of Twenty 4 Seven. “Then you see your dream collapse a little bit,” says Nance with tears in her eyes. “I have been angry for a long time. Or maybe I still am.”

“It’s very bad to be denied,” she says about the performances in which her voice was used but she was not allowed to attend. “I feel denied.” Nevertheless, Ruud felt that Nance had ‘the right’ to return to the stage and she continued as a solo singer.
