Twelve years in prison for a Brazilian woman who stabbed a Dutch friend to death

Hans van Denderen was found at the end of 2018 with stab wounds in his chest and neck along the side of the road in a piece of forest some 100 kilometers west of the metropolis of São Paulo.

Because the police found no proof of identity with his body, he was buried as an unknown dead person in a nearby village.

Faulty English

Not long afterwards, acquaintances of Van Denderen, who had been living in Brazil for twenty years, became suspicious. The reason for this was WhatsApp messages in poor English that were sent via his telephone. He told a student he was teaching English that he was in the Netherlands to visit his sick sister.

That turned out to be nonsense, the acquaintances discovered when inquiring with family members of Van Denderen. He was then reported missing. More than two weeks after the murder, Van Denderen’s girlfriend was arrested. It turned out that she owned the phone from Van Denderen.

Resentment

In a session in February last year, the woman admitted to having killed Van Denderen. In her own words, she did that out of resentment because he wanted to end their relationship.

After the murder, she continued to live in the house of the Dutchman and used his bank account.
