The twelve clubs want to leave the Champions League and instead establish the Super League, a tournament in which they are assured of participation every year regardless of their performance in their own country and do not have to share the lucrative TV money with small clubs. French and German top clubs do not participate in the Super League.
The American bank JP Morgan would like to invest no less than four billion euros annually in the Super League, which should eventually accommodate twenty clubs, fifteen of which are permanent.
UEFA furious and threatens to take measures
The clubs stated in a statement that they would like to work with UEFA and FIFA “to achieve the best outcome for the Super League and football in general”, but the clubs cannot count on much cooperation from UEFA.
The organizer of the Champions League reacted furiously to the intention of the twelve clubs before the official announcement. It repeated a joint threat from the world football association FIFA and the other continental federations.
“We will use all available means, both judicial and sports, to prevent a Super League,” said the European Football Association. “The clubs involved will be banned from national, European and global competitions. It may also make it impossible for the players to play for the national team.”
Former football player Gary Neville is also furious. “It’s pure greed,” he fulminated at Sky Sports.
