But locals and newcomers alike also benefit from the wide range of jobs, leisure opportunities and quality of life. To which a lively religious community also belongs as a reference point around the Gothic fortress Marienberg. Today there are 67 Christian churches of both denominations in the area of the city of Würzburg alone.
Focused view of the altar
One of the youngest churches in Würzburg is the Church of Gethsemane, which was only designed in 1988 and built between 1998 and 2000 in the Heuchelhof district, by the way the youngest and largest district of Würzburg. It is an impressive architectural project by Alexander Freiherr von Branca, who also designed the Michaelskirche on the Schwanberg in the Steigerwald, but at the same time exudes immense calm.
The viewer’s gaze is immediately drawn to the pagoda-shaped dome, which rests on ten pillars and is crowned by a glass lantern at the highest point.
The massive round wall of the building as a whole is made of Kirchheimer shell limestone. The builders have saved with windows that offer a view of the interior. As a visitor, when you step through the large glass front door, you are literally sucked into the bright and perfectly lit interior. Everything is arranged in a circle here, the benches, the ceiling lighting, everything concentrates the view from the center of the room to the simple altar.
Peace bell made of weapons
The bell tower, a steeple, has housed five bells since its completion in 2001. Four are from Heilbronn, the Peace Bell was cast near Dresden in 1996 from unarmed Soviet weapons material.
