Twelve countries, including the US, UK, Germany and Italy, issued a joint statement on Wednesday, January 3, warning Yemen’s Houthi rebels against further attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
Text of the statement distributed press services of the heads of state of these countries, reports European Pravda.
The joint statement noted that Houthi attacks in the Red Sea are “illegal, unacceptable and deeply destabilizing.”
“Attacks on ships, including commercial ones, using unmanned aerial vehicles, small boats and missiles, in particular first use of anti-ship ballistic missiles against such vessels pose a direct threat to freedom of navigation, which is the basis of global trade on one of the world’s most important waterways,” these countries point out.
The signatories indicated that almost 15% of global maritime trade passes through the Red Sea, including 8% of global grain trade, 12% of oil and 8% of liquefied natural gas. Therefore, Houthi attacks threaten the movement of food, fuel and humanitarian aid around the world.
Britain may strike Houthis in Yemen who are attacking merchant ships in the Red Sea
“Let us be clear: we call for an immediate end to these unlawful attacks and the release of illegally detained vessels and crews. The Houthis will bear the consequences if they continue to threaten human lives, the global economy and the free flow of trade along the region’s critical waterways.” – they added.
The statement was published on behalf of the USA, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Great Britain and Japan.
In recent weeks, Iran-backed Houthi militants have begun attacking or shooting at merchant ships around the Arabian Peninsula under the pretext that they are attacking Israeli-linked ships.
In response, the United States announced on the creation of an international mission, predominantly involving NATO allies, to protect merchant ships. Great Britain sent to participate in the mission destroyer HMS Diamond.
