TVP instructs what to do in the event of the disappearance of TVP1, TVP2 and TVP3

In a few weeks, MUX-3 (TVP1, TVP2, TVP3, TVP Info and TVP Historia) will switch to the DVB-T2 standard with the HEVC codec. It is estimated that between 200,000 and 500,000 people have older TVs and tuners. households with digital terrestrial television. Their inhabitants will lose access to stations known from MUX-3. The process will be carried out in two stages. The first of them will take place on the night of December 14-15 and will cover the western part of Poland, i.e. the West Pomeranian, Pomeranian, Lubusz, Greater Poland, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Łódź, Lower Silesian, Opole and Silesian voivodeships. In the eastern part of Poland, i.e. in the Warmian-Masurian, Podlaskie, Masovian, Lublin, Świętokrzyskie, Małopolskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships, the switchover will take place on the night of December 18-19.

The change in the broadcasting standard will be preceded by an information campaign prepared by TVP, with the participation of Krzysztof Ziemec, host of “Teleexpress” on TVP1, and Tomasz Wolny, presenter of “Panorama” and “Pytania na breakfast” on TVP2. Over 2,000 spots are planned to be broadcast. Materials about the change in the standard will also appear in “Wiadomości” TVP1 and “Panorama” TVP2. Information about DVB-T2 is already displayed in the bottom bar of TVP Info. The text message also appears during popular productions, such as the series “M jak miłość”.

A premature guide on TVP3 Łódź

Regional centers of Polish Television also joined the action. TVP3 Łódź provides spots on its website intended for broadcast after the standard change, which may be misleading. – In December 2023, the standard for broadcasting TVP programs on terrestrial television changed. If you are currently receiving TVP1, TVP2 and TVP3 in positions 1, 2 and 3 on the remote control, the process of changing the broadcasting standard has been successful. If the list of programs on your receiver is incomplete or the programs are in different positions than before, you should retune your TV or decoder. After doing this, the program list will be complete and the TVP1, TVP2 and TVP3 programs should return to their numbers on the remote control. If you need technical support, ask your family or a friendly neighbor for help. Detailed information at www.telewizjanaziemna.pl – you can hear in the spot.

Currently, viewers, even if they have an old TV or decoder, will receive TVP1, TVP2 and TVP3 in the old DVB-T standard. After watching the commercial, they will assume that their device supports DVB-T2 and do not need to buy a new one. They may lose signal in two weeks. In addition, the spot includes a statement about an incomplete list of programs. Then the TVP2 logo disappears. This is an unlikely situation, because TV sets either receive the signal from some multiplex or they do not. If someone has a properly installed antenna and is within the range of MUX-3, the list should include all stations from this multiplex, not individual ones. The public broadcaster talks about retuning the TV, but does not explain how to do it. Of course, this means selecting the “channel search” item in the menu. Many newer TVs will do this automatically.

How to check if your TV supports DVB-T2?

The second spot published on the TVP3 Łódź website is more correct. – On December 15, there will be a change in the standard of broadcasting TVP programs on terrestrial television. If currently the terrestrial antenna only receives: TVP1, TVP2, TVP3, TVP Info, TVP Sport, TVP Historia, it means that your equipment most likely does not support the new standard. Replace your TV or decoder with a new one that will ensure reception of the full TVP programming offer on terrestrial television. Do you need technical support or additional information? Ask your family or a friendly neighbor for help. More information at www.telewizjanaziemna.pl – you can hear in the spot.

TVP does not mention that MUX-8 (Nowa TV, Metro, Zoom TV, Telewizja WP) is and will be broadcast in the old standard after December 19. Viewers with older devices will not lose access to it. I also do not suggest checking the possibility of receiving stations from other multiplexes that already broadcast in DVB-T2. If someone has them, they do not have to replace the equipment. This is important because some digital terrestrial television recipients do not receive all multiplexes due to an inappropriate antenna. For example, peaceful instead of external, which is more effective.

DVB-T2/HEVC already broadcasts channels from MUX-1 (TTV, Antena HD, TV Trwam, Stopklatka, Fokus TV, Eska TV, Polo TV), MUX-2 (Polsat, Super Polsat, TV4, TV6, TVN, TVN7, TV Puls, TVN7), MUX-4 (Events 24 and the paid Polsat Box package) and MUX-6 (TVP ABC, TVP Kultura, TVP Rozrywka, TVP Polonia, TVP Woman, TVP Nauka, TVP Document, Alfa TVP, Belsat ). If the terrestrial recipient has channels from one of these multiplexes, he or she does not have to replace the equipment. If he only misses some stations, he should better adjust his antenna or invest in an external antenna.

The migration may coincide with changes in TVP

Last year, you could benefit from government funding of up to PLN 100 for the purchase of a decoder or PLN 250 for a new TV set. This year the program is not valid. Viewers at risk of signal loss must therefore invest in the equipment themselves. The cheapest DVB-T2/HEVC tuners can be purchased for PLN 60, and TV sets for less than PLN 500.

The change will bring some benefits for viewers, because they will be able to watch TVP3 and TVP Historia in HD quality and will regain access to stations from other multiplexes that changed the standard in the first half of 2022. TVP was given time by the Office of Electronic Communications to migrate until the end of 2023. This was explained by the war in Ukraine, but private broadcasters claim that the reason was the upcoming parliamentary elections. It was supposed to be about a greater reach of TVP news programs than TVP or Polsat. Commercial broadcasters intend to count potentially lost advertising revenues and apply for compensation from the State Treasury.

Recently, the National Broadcasting Council published a new seating schedule on Polish Television multiplexes after changing the MUX-3 standard to DVB-T2/HEVC. TVP ABC and TVP Kultura channels will be broadcast on the third multiplex. In turn, TVP World will return to digital terrestrial television. It will be available via MUX-6. The public broadcaster, in turn, informed that in order to provide these viewers with additional time to tune their receivers, TVP will broadcast selected channels simultaneously on both MUX-3 and MUX-6. This will apply to: TVP1, TVP2, TVP Info in the period from December 15, 2023 to January 12, 2024 and TVP ABC and TVP Kultura in the period from December 19, 2023 to January 12, 2024.

Experts in an interview with Wirtualnemedia.pl criticized the timing of MUX-3 migration to the new standard. This is the period before Christmas itself, when many people are focused on shopping and other preparations for the holidays. Donald Tusk’s government will also start work soon and announces quick changes in the management of Telewizja Polska. Its news programs broadcast daily material about this announcement. There are many opinions that some viewers with older TV sets may perceive the disappearance of TVP channels as the liquidation of the public broadcaster.
