After the general director of TVI, José Eduardo Moniz, jokingly stated that the General Assembly of FC Porto last November was more serious than international conflicts such as those in Ukraine or Palestine, the president of FC Porto, Pinto da Costa, accused the person responsible for starring in “a sad television show”. The director regretted the words spoken at TVI’s anniversary gala, attacking the former vice-president of Benfica.
“I haven’t seen the program, I normally don’t watch TVI. But I started receiving messages with a transcript of what was said. I think it’s regrettable, but as evil rhymes with imbecility, the two things together created that sad television show, which ended with people calling the President of the Board of Directors ‘Manelinho’, ‘Marinho’ and offering trips to Neptune. I really think that TVI should make a special trip to Neptuno and leave a lot of people there, although I have nothing against Neptuno”, replied Pinto da Costa, on the sidelines of the presentation of SAD Porto’s accounts.
José Eduardo Moniz’s supposed joke was made during TVI’s anniversary gala. The now general director of TVI was vice-president of Benfica under the direction of Luís Filipe Vieira, with the comment earning a chorus of criticism from the “blue and white” universe.
“This was a year in which we were present in some of the world’s main conflicts. Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Palestine. And in the greatest of all, the General Assembly of FC Porto”, joked the general director of TVI. The meeting of Porto members that was supposed to see the vote on a statutory change was marked by aggression between members, having motivated the start of the Operation Praetorian. In this investigation, among others, the leader of the Super Dragões, Fernando Madureira, was arrested.
“Sad misfortune or sad figure?”
The first reaction occurred moments after this moment, at the hands of André Villas-Boas, candidate for president of FC Porto. On the official Instagram page, the former coach demanded respect from TVI management, classifying Moniz’s joke as a “sad incident” and something “unworthy” for a media outlet.
“Sad misfortune or sad figure? An apology to Futebol Clube do Porto, its fans and supporters is the least that should be demanded from TVI management for the unfortunate incident we have just witnessed. Making circus jokes that deeply disrespect the Institution is regrettable and unworthy of any media body that must care for the common good, respect, equity and transparency”, wrote the Porto presidential candidate.
The “dragons” communications director, Francisco J. Marques, also criticized the TVI manager’s comment. In a post made on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the Porto official says that this moment shows “how far human stupidity can reach”.
“Hundreds of thousands of dead and Moniz, who this time didn’t flee to Brazil, trying to make jokes, making fun of the suffering caused by the war. Sad TVI that is run by people who only live for color magazines -pink”, writes Francisco J. Marques.
