An irresistible mix
“Turkish for Beginners”, the screen adaptation of her successful TV series of the same name, was already a huge hit in 2012 with almost 2.4 million cinemagoers. However, no one could have guessed what director/screenwriter Bora Dagtekin and his leading actor Elyas M’Barek would achieve with “Fack ju Göhte” the following year. After less than two weeks, the film “Turkish for Beginners” had already easily overtaken the audience. In the end, he even easily outpaced all of the year’s Hollywood blockbusters in this country – including “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, “Frozen”, “Django Unchained” and “The Hunger Games – Catching Fire”. By the end of 2015, an incredible 7,384,008 tickets had been solved.
“How could this happen?” some uninitiated people are probably asking themselves. Our strong FILMSTARTS review, which awards 4 out of 5 possible stars, provides answers to this. In conclusion, the film is described as a “cheeky, funny comedy with laughs every minute, a pinch of emotion and brilliant actors”. Dagtekin showed no fear of crude jokes, unrestrained exaggeration and political incorrectness. But he didn’t shy away from sprinkling in a little romance, a little emotion or a lot of warmth at the right moment – a mix that he managed almost perfectly and that you simply can’t resist. Dagtekin’s exuberant school fluff is still enormously entertaining a decade later and led to two similarly colossal sequels plus the spin-off hit “Chantal in Fairytale Land”, which was only released in 2024.
Fack ju Göhte” made Elyas M’Barek a superstar as a substitute teacher who worked with pedagogically questionable methods. And the careers of his students Jella Haase (“Berlin Alexanderplatz”) and Max von der Groeben (“Bibi & Tina 1-4”) also really took off. In addition, proven actresses such as Karoline Herfurth (“Wonderful”), Katja Riemann (“The Moving Man”), Uschi Glas (“On the Matter, Sweetheart”) and Jana Pallaske from “What’s the Use of Love in Thoughts” were there, who clearly and clearly enjoyed their performances.
That’s what “Fack ju Göhte” is all about
Petty crook Zeki Müller (M’Barek) finally gets out of jail and now wants to get the loot from his last coup that was buried before his arrest. Unfortunately, the new gymnasium of the Goethe Comprehensive School is now located at exactly this location. Without further ado, he applies to the school as a caretaker.
All that director Gerster (Riemann) is currently desperately looking for is a substitute teacher. Zeki shows himself to be flexible and, despite his own, at best, rudimentary schooling, gets hired as a new teacher for German and sports. He steals the necessary papers by approaching the idealistic but hopelessly overwhelmed trainee teacher Lisi Schnabelstedt (Herfurth).
While he secretly digs a tunnel to the gym at night, he now teaches during the day. With his down-to-earth manner that is never at a loss for a saying, Zeki even gets the problem class 10b, which is feared by the staff, under control. Surprisingly to himself, over time he actually starts to enjoy being a teacher (as well as Lisi). But then his cover is blown…
By the way, a new comedy with Elyas M’Barek will be coming to German cinemas shortly. In the following article you can find out everything about “Old White Man” and also watch the trailer:
