TV stations save the Bundesliga clubs – Telebasel

It is the long-awaited message for the clubs in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga: the negotiations between the German Football League (DFL) and the TV stations have finally achieved a breakthrough. The Pay TV broadcaster Sky is apparently ready to pay the last of four installments for the broadcasting rights of the Bundesliga games. The “Bild” newspaper reported on Thursday evening.

Money is expected to flow in April

In total, Sky paid the DFL around 900 million euros for the broadcasting rights for 266 games in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. The last tranche is around 225 million euros. In the tough negotiations, a compromise has been reached that Sky will transfer the league a little less money – after all, it is still unclear whether the season can be ended due to the corona pandemic. And if so, then probably with ghost games.

But the millions flow quickly. The money is due to arrive at the DFL in April. And they should save clubs like Paderborn, Union Berlin, Freiburg and Fortuna Düsseldorf from bankruptcy. The DFL and Sky did not want to comment on the “Bild” on request.

ARD and ZDF also pay – DAZN questionable

According to information from the newspaper, the two TV stations ARD and ZDF are also ready to transfer their share. Together, this amounts to around 40 million euros. What remains is the sports stream service DAZN, with which the negotiations are apparently dragging on. This is said to be under severe pressure, as sporting events worldwide are suspended. According to the media report, the DFL can expect a rate of around 20 million euros from DAZN.
