After two victories against Scotland and the Faroe Islands, Denmark aimed for a third victory this national team break when Israel came to visit the Park in Copenhagen – and they set the conditions for that immediately.
After 28 minutes on the match clock, Yussuf Poulsen stayed ahead and set the opening goal 1-0 to Denmark on a performance by the EC’s successful player Mikkel Damsgaard. Shortly afterwards, in the 31st minute of the match, team captain Simon Kjaer nodded in 2-0 on a free kick from Daniel Wass. And before the half was over, Andreas Skov Olsen would also have time to put 3-0, where Damsgaard once again provided the assist.
The second half, in turn, did not offer the same goal cavalcade, but it offered “only” two goals. Thomas Delaney made it 4-0 with the hour played on play from Wass and incoming Andreas Cornelius fixed the final score 5-0 in overtime.
Denmark is now storming towards a World Cup final. After six games played, they have six wins, 18 points and a 22-0 goal difference. They have thus scored 22 goals without conceding a single, and now lead Group F with a full seven points ahead of second-placed Scotland on eleven points.
According to the Danish national team captain, Denmark has broken the world record for best start in the World Cup qualifiers, since the current format was introduced in the 1960s.
– We have actually broken world records, as far as we know. Six matches won in a World Cup qualifier with held zeros, says Hjulmand to Danish Kanal 5 after the match.
