TÜV Süd in further trial due to dam failure in Brazil

On Monday, at the Munich District Court, I heard another lawsuit against TÜV Süd for the Brumadinho Dam accident in Brazil. A court spokesman confirmed the appointment on Friday. There are currently a total of around 35 proceedings on this subject, some with a large number of plaintiffs. The “Spiegel” had previously reported on the procedure.

According to the newspaper, it should deal with claims for 12.75 million euros. The more than 100 plaintiffs are relatives of victims and survivors.

The proceeding concerns the rupture of the retention basin of an iron ore mine belonging to the Brazilian mining company Vale on January 25, 2019. At that moment, a mudslide poured into a landscape in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. He rolled over parts of the mine and neighboring settlements, taking people and animals, houses and equipment with him. At least 260 people died.

A subsidiary of TÜV Süd had only tested the dam six months earlier and found it safe. In the past, TÜV Süd has rejected legal responsibility for the dam breach because mining company Vale failed to meet specifications.
