Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra Gaming Controller Review: The Ultimate Controller with “No-Drift Thumbsticks”

Turtle Beach has relatively bravely introduced the Stealth Ultra, what it calls “a premium gaming controller” equipped with RGB lighting and an LCD screen, which claims to have better battery life than Sony’s DualSense. In practice, up to 25 odd hours.

The design process appears to have been an adventurous brainstorming session with the goal of challenging the Xbox Elite Series 2, leading to the creation of this simply over-the-top gaming controller.

Straight out of the box, the Stealth Ultra impresses with its larger and more spherical appearance compared to the conventional Xbox controller, with a lighter weight thanks to its built-in lithium-ion battery.

It comes with a charging station that also houses a 2.4GHz wireless USB dongle, and the package also includes four rubber covers for the thumbsticks and a USB-C to USB-A cable. The controller’s prominent design and features make it a notable entrant in the gaming accessory market.

Finally what every controller should have

Most of all because of the “no-drift thumb sticks”.

“No-drift thumb sticks” are a technological improvement in the design of analog sticks (thumb sticks) on game controllers, which aim to prevent or minimize the problem known as “stick drift.” Stick drift is a common problem where an analog stick detects movement even when it is not touched or moved by the user. This can lead to unwanted movements or actions in games, which can be frustrating for players.

Traditional analog levers work by using potentiometers that measure the position of the lever based on how much it is angled from its center position. Over time, wear, dust, and dirt can cause these potentiometers to send incorrect signals, resulting in drift.

“No-drift thumb sticks” attempt to solve this problem through various methods, which may include better material choices, more robust designs, or even completely new ways of registering the movement without relying on the traditional potentiometers.

The goal is to create a more reliable gaming experience where players’ input is accurately reproduced over time, even after extensive use. And; Yes, it can do it. Now it must be said that we have not used it for more than four consecutive weeks, but it has had to deal with both wall throwing and other things.

Social Media

You can connect the controller to Discord (and other social stuff, but why?) to see when people log in or out, and the app itself that controls the controller works well. Not that you need it since you can control everything directly from the screen yourself. That means separate functions for the different buttons (yep, it has several subs) and various other things.

In addition, the controller therefore stands out with its relatively unique design; among other things, the D-Pad has a concave appearance. Another innovation is the placement of two buttons on either side of the underside, strategically placed where the middle finger of many users will naturally lie.

These buttons, which can be easily activated with a pinch motion or a tap on the side of the finger, feature clickable microswitches for a more satisfying response than the often softer feel of buttons on other controllers, including the Xbox Elite Series 2.

The analog triggers on the Stealth Ultra take a different path than the other buttons by not using micro switches. Instead, they are equipped with trigger locks that allow for either fine-tuned control or immediate activation with a short pull. This provides a more customizable gaming experience compared to the standard controller.

The short version is that this is the controller that the Xbox Elite Wireless Series 2 should have been. Totally crazy in price, but also crazy in use.

We give a dice roll of 6, but it costs a lot of money so it is with a small caveat.
