The catering industry recorded 92.2 percent more turnover in the first quarter of this year than in the first quarter of 2021, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported on Tuesday. This means that turnover is slightly higher than at the beginning of 2020, the start of the corona crisis, but it is approaching the level of the last quarter of 2019.
It is no surprise that the turnover of catering businesses in our country is almost twice as high as a year earlier, because everything was still closed in the first quarter of last year due to the corona lockdown that applied at the time.
It was mainly cafes and hotels that thrived in the first three months of this year. Cafés saw their turnover rise by 300 percent, for hotels it was an increase of 174 percent. Hotels still earned 22 percent less than before the corona crisis, cafes recorded 6 percent less turnover.
This year too, the first quarter started with a lockdown, but relaxations were subsequently implemented. Compared to the last quarter of last year, the catering industry recorded 10 percent more turnover, with cafes and restaurants seeing the strongest increase.
