Most of turmeric’s health benefits can be attributed to curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, which has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
According to a study in the journal BioFactors, test-tube studies show that curcumin can suppress certain inflammatory markers that play a role in obesity.
Several studies in animals have shown that this compound promotes weight loss, reduces the growth of fat tissue, inhibits weight gain, and increases sensitivity to the hormone insulin.

The results of the many existing studies sound promising. However, more human studies are needed before turmeric can be widely recommended for weight loss.
