The Finnish city of Turku will buy and demolish the former Russian Consulate General office building
In the summer, the Finnish government announced that Finland was withdrawing its consent for Russia to run its consulate general in Turku from October 1. The decision followed Russia’s decision to close the Finnish Consulate General in St. Petersburg.
The land on which the building is located is approximately 3,500 square meters. The building itself was built by the Russian Consulate in 1974 and has an area of approximately 2,000 square meters.
Many people have also called for the closure of the Russian consulate in the Åland town of Mariehamn. However, this month, President Sauli Niinisto, after reviewing a report on problems related to the special status of Åland and the Russian consular office there, announced that Finland would not take any steps.
