Türkiye will postpone Sweden’s admission to NATO: EADaily

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Grand National Assembly (Parliament) of Turkey decided to postpone the discussion of the bill approving the protocol on Sweden’s accession to NATO. Anadolu Agency reports this.

The Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkey spoke at the meeting Burak Akchapar. He said that Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance “will make the Euro-Atlantic region more secure” and will also contribute to the development of bilateral relations between Ankara and Stockholm.

The diplomat also noted that there are “positive changes” in the Swedish side’s perception of Ankara’s “legitimate security concerns,” primarily related to opposition to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

He said Sweden would present Turkey with a “road map” containing responsibilities and steps it must take to counter terrorism.

As a result of the debate, the committee decided to postpone approval of Sweden’s accession to NATO:

“…due to the lack of clarity on the subject under discussion and the lack of maturity of the negotiations.”

Earlier in October, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a protocol on Sweden’s accession to NATO.
