Türkiye to join South Africa’s ICJ genocide suit against Israel

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on Monday that Ankara will file a request with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to join South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel for an alleged violation of the Genocide Convention due to its military offensive on the Gaza Strip.

The minister explained that Turkey will submit a request on Wednesday to join the demand that South Africa made at the end of December 2023 against Israel due to its offensive in Gaza, where more than 39,600 Palestinians have already died, according to figures from the Gazan authorities.

Fidan, who is in Egypt’s capital Cairo, where he met with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdulati, also stressed that those who support Israel “unconditionally” are primarily responsible for shaking the foundations of the international order, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The Turkish foreign minister had already announced in May, together with his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, that Ankara would join the request made by South Africa, although the process was not formalised at that time.
