Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Monday that Ankara will submit a request on Wednesday to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

Fidan made the remarks during a joint televised press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

He stressed that the Middle East region cannot bear any more tensions, adding that his country had previously warned that supporting Israel, whether with arms or silence, would harm the region.

Fidan noted that Israel’s escalation in Gaza led to the current tension in the region, adding that Israel poses a major threat to the region and calling for an end to its “brutality” in Gaza.

Earlier, Fidan met with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to discuss recent regional issues and the risk of escalation of conflicts.

During the meeting, both sides condemned “Israel’s escalatory policies” and stressed the gravity of the regional situation. They reaffirmed the need to move towards a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, based on a two-state solution, in order to achieve sustainable justice, security and stability in the region.
