Türkiye applies for membership in BRICS

Türkiye requested to join the BRICS, the group of big ones emerging countries among which are China y Brazilthe ruling party’s spokesman said Tuesday.

“Our president has said several times that we want to become a member of the BRICS. (…) The process is underway,” said Ömer Çelik, spokesman for the Justice and Development Party (AKP, conservative Islamist), of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The spokesman said in a press conference that Erdogan “has made it clear that Turkey wants to participate in all important platforms, including the BRICS.”

Created with four members (Brazil, China, India and Russia) in 2009, the bloc accepted South Africa in 2010. In the summer of 2023, the bloc accepted the entry of Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Argentina, which did not formalize its entry after the arrival of the presidency of Javier Miley.

“We do not consider BRICS as an alternative to any other structure,” Erdogan, whose country has been a candidate for membership for decades, said in July. European Union (EU).
