Turkish Teenager Arrested for Drawing Mustache on Erdogan Campaign Poster

Istanbul

Turkish authorities arrested and imprisoned a 16-year-old boy. The teenager was jailed for drawing a mustache on an election campaign poster that depicted the President being re-elected, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Several outlets close to the opposition, including the daily BirGun newspaper Cumhuriyet and private TV station Halk TV, said the young man from the southeastern city of Mersin was accused of defacing a poster near his home with a pen.

The teenager allegedly scribbled on Erdoğan posters with a Hitler mustache and wrote insults.

The teenager was arrested after being identified by CCTV cameras. Authorities interviewed him at his home, where he reportedly “admitted to drawing a mustache” but denied writing the accompanying comments.

The man was brought before the public prosecutor. He is said to have insulted the president and is being held in a nearby youth facility.

According to the Turkish justice ministry, insulting the president is one of the most common crimes in Turkey. Last year, there were 16,753 similar cases prosecuted by the authorities in Türkiye.
