Turkish Super Cup Final in Riyadh Cancelled: Teams Refuse to Play Over Disputes with Saudi Authorities

The final of the Turkish Super Cup, between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, was scheduled for 5:45 pm this Friday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but is not expected to take place.

The teams reportedly refused to go to the game, after the Saudi authorities rejected several conditions. The Saudis did not accept the playing of the Turkish anthem in the stadium’s sound system, as well as prohibiting the teams from paying tribute to former president Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey.

Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe intended to wear shirts in honor of the country’s first president and also display a banner that read “Peace at home, peace in the world”.

According to the international press, meetings between the Turkish Federation and the Saudi authorities took place throughout the day, but it was not possible to reach an agreement and the teams have already left the Al-Awwal Park stadium and gone to their respective hotels.

An official statement from the Turkish Federation is awaited at this time.
