The Turkish Super Cup final between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce in the Saudi capital Riyadh, scheduled for Friday evening, was canceled at the last minute due to disagreements between the two clubs and the Saudi authorities. This was reported by the Turkish channel NTV.

According to the TV channel, the conflict arose over claims that the Turkish national anthem would not be played and that Saudi officials would not allow players to wear T-shirts featuring the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, before the match.

Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe wanted to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Turkish republic.

Still busy discussions

Discussions are still ongoing in the Saudi capital: the Turkish Minister of Sports and the management of Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray are discussing how and where the Super Cup should be played.

Fans of both clubs would have preferred the Super Cup to have been completed in Turkey. They do not rule out that Turkey and Saudi Arabia wanted to strengthen political ties. Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in the Saudi Arabian embassy in Istanbul five years ago.
