“Turkish Presidential Election: Runoff Set for May 28 Between Erdogan and Kiliçdaroglu”

All votes for the Turkish presidential election have been counted. Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his opponent Kemal Kiliçdaroglu failed to get 50 percent of the vote in the first round. That is why there will be another vote on May 28.

Incumbent President Erdogan has received 49.5 percent of the vote. Kiliçdaroglu has stuck at 44.9 percent. None of the candidates therefore has an absolute majority. But it is necessary to declare a winner.

That is why the Turks will go to the polls again on May 28. The candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the vote wins the presidential election.

There has been little difference between Erdogan and Kiliçdaroglu in the polls for weeks. But this month, the opposition candidate’s popularity seemed to be on the rise. Last week, former fellow party member Muharrem Ince also dropped out of the race, which seemed to further improve Kiliçdaroglu’s chances.

From May 20 to May 24, voting will take place abroad, including in the Netherlands. Preparations for the polls in Turkey will begin on 21 May. The result of the presidential election is expected on May 29.
