Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Claims Victory in Presidential Elections

|

As the counting of votes for the presidential elections in Turkey approached, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan went out to address his supporters, saying, “We have achieved a great victory, but we are waiting for the official results that will show the national will.”

In a large crowd of his supporters in front of the headquarters of the Justice and Development Party in the Turkish capital, Ankara, Erdogan said, “We are leading in these elections by a large margin, although the results are not final yet.”

He added, “We believe that the presidential race will end in the first round, and if the people decide to complete these elections in a second round, we are ready for that and aware of our victory.”

Erdogan was keen to stress that “if there is a run-off, we will respect that.”

The Turkish president referred to the counting of votes abroad, and said that it was necessary to follow them up because “they have not been counted until this moment,” adding that he has faith that he will be able to serve his country through a new mandate.

Referring to the statements of the opposition camp led by his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the Turkish president said that they “are trying to deceive the people by saying that they are advanced,” and stressed that “the Republican People’s Party and some mayors tried to question the results, but that does not change the reality.”

Erdogan believed that the winner of these elections is Turkey and its people, who adhered to the national will and democracy through the turnout at the polling stations, noting that the participation rate in the Turkish elections is unparalleled in the world, and is the largest in Turkey’s political history.

At the same time, the Turkish president said that the results of the parliamentary elections indicate that the “Public Alliance”, which he heads, achieves the majority, considering that “the people must be vigilant until the end of the counting of votes.”
