Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that the Ukrainian grain export initiative via the Black Sea had prevented a global “hunger crisis,” but he warned of a new crisis as a result of failure to implement the initiative.
Erdogan added in a speech before the United Nations General Assembly: “The failure to implement the grain agreement in all its elements has pushed the world into a new crisis,” according to the Arab World News Agency.
Regarding the Syrian file, Erdogan stressed the need to put an end to the war in the country through “a just and comprehensive solution that meets the expectations of the Syrian people.”
Erdogan added that Turkey “will not leave four million Syrians living in difficult conditions in the northern parts of their country and facing their fate alone.”
The Turkish President also considered that his country “is the only country that adopts principled positions regarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria.”
He continued: “We have launched many initiatives to ensure stability and peace around the world,” adding: “Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, we have been keen to ensure that both parties remain at the negotiating table to reach peace.”
The Turkish President stressed his country’s continued mediation in Ukraine, saying: “We will intensify our diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.”
Regarding climate change, Erdogan said, “Climate change and the challenges associated with it have become a reality that we live in. Libya has been subjected to widespread destruction and loss of life due to the hurricane and floods.”
Regarding Syria, he explained that “the humanitarian crisis in Syria is worsening, and we have adopted one position on ensuring Syria’s unity, stability and territorial integrity, and we will continue to encourage the return of refugees to their country.”
The Turkish President spoke about his country’s relationship with Egypt, saying: “Our relations with Egypt were marred by some tension at one time, but we are deepening them now thanks to common interests.”
Regarding the crises in the region, the Turkish President expressed his hope to “settle the problem in Yemen forever,” and also called for “the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders so that Palestine and Israel can enjoy peace.”
The Turkish President expressed his welcome to “the African Union’s membership in the G20,” calling on countries of the world to “provide support to the African Union to confront its crises.”
Regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis, Erdogan expected a peace agreement to be reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan, stressing Turkey’s support for “Azerbaijan’s steps to preserve its regional integrity.”
He urged the Turkish President to “combat hate speech and discrimination against innocent people, which has reached all parts of the world.”
He said, “The mentalities that encourage attacks against the Qur’an by raising the banner of freedom of expression destabilize its future,” calling on all countries to “confront hate speech that threatens the stability of the world.”
