Israel must be held accountable under international law for the crimes committed, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a telephone conversation today ahead of tomorrow’s UN Security Council meeting on Gaza, Anadolu Agency reported, quoted by BTA.
During the conversation, the “expectations of the international community regarding Israel’s illegal attacks, proposals to resolve the humanitarian crisis and efforts to achieve lasting peace” were discussed, the Turkish presidency announced.
President Erdoğan has stated that “Israel continues to blatantly violate international law, wartime law and humanitarian law, looking the international community in the eye” and that “it must be held accountable for the crimes committed before international law.”
The Turkish leader conveyed his condolences to Guterres for the more than 100 UN staff who lost their lives in Israeli attacks on Gaza. He also pointed out that Guterres’ personal visit to the Rafah border crossing was useful in attracting the attention of the international community.
