Turkish President Erdogan Accuses Reactions to Super Cup Cancellation as “Sabotage”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the reactions to the cancellation of the Turkish Super Cup match in Saudi Arabia as a clear sabotage initiative.

“In the summer there was a campaign trying to destroy tourism, and now we see that with the support of opposition parties they are trying to do something similar through sports,” Erdogan said during a public event in Ankara.

He added: “It is not a coincidence that this wave of hatred is directed against a sister country that is one of our largest trading partners and invests in Turkey, and was by our side during the earthquake last February.”

The Turkish Football Federation issued a statement stating that the offer to play the Super Cup in Riyadh came from the Saudi company SMC, explaining that the Turkish President did not participate in the initiative.
