Sweden’s admission protocol was ratified in a vote in the parliament with 287 votes to 55. Four deputies abstained from voting.

Sweden submitted an application for membership in the alliance together with Finland in 2022, after Russia began its repeated invasion of Ukraine.

In April 2023, Finland became a member of the alliance, but Sweden’s accession was delayed by Turkey and Hungary.

After Sweden’s accession protocol has been ratified by parliament, it still needs to be signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and published in the official gazette to take effect.

After Turkey’s support, Hungary remains the only NATO member still blocking Sweden from joining the alliance.
