Turkish Parliament Approves Sweden’s Membership in NATO, Bringing Membership One Step Closer – Associated Press

Ankara published today in the Turkish state gazette a legal text approving Sweden’s membership in NATO, finalizing the ratification that brings the Scandinavian country one step closer to joining the military alliance, the Associated Press reported.

Hungary now remains the only NATO ally that has not ratified Sweden’s accession.

Turkey’s parliament approved Sweden’s accession in a vote on Tuesday. The ruling party said Stockholm’s tougher stance on Kurdish fighters was key to winning approval.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has previously linked the ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership to Ankara’s desire to buy fighter jets from the US.
