Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan, Swedish Foreign Minister Bilstrom and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg attended the talks on the day. Fidan said after the meeting that countries wishing to join NATO must take a firmer stand on the issue of anti-terrorism. Sweden has taken steps in terms of legislative reform, but legislative reform needs to be reflected in practice. Moreover, Sweden did not prevent some provocative actions that affected Turkey’s position.

Stoltenberg said at the press conference after the meeting that this was a fruitful meeting. During the talks, the three parties agreed that good progress had been made and that Sweden’s joining NATO was in the security interests of all allies.

The NATO summit will be held in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, from the 11th to the 12th. Stoltenberg said he would arrange a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson the day before the summit.

Billstrom said after the meeting that progress had been made and a “positive” decision was expected next week.

After the Ukrainian crisis escalated in February 2022, Sweden and Finland simultaneously applied to join NATO in May of the same year. Last July, representatives of NATO’s 30 member states signed the protocol of accession by Finland and Sweden to the treaty. According to the regulations, all NATO member states must agree to accept new members. Finland was officially approved to join NATO on April 4 this year, but Turkey and Hungary have not yet officially approved Sweden to join.
