Turkish opposition joins forces to bring down government AKP and President Erdogan in elections – CT24 – Czech Television

In the middle of Ankara, a monument to magnificent ambitions is falling apart. The amusement park for 18 billion crowns was opened last year by the town hall run by AKP. “It is an illegal building that violates the conditions established by the land after its dedication to the nation by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk,” said Tezcan Karakuş Candan, president of the Ankara Chamber of Architects.

Due to the lack of public interest, the complex closed after a year. Shortly after the AKP lost the municipal election to the united opposition. After opening, President Erdogan called the amusement park a symbol of pride. On the contrary, according to critics, it is a symbol of waste, nepotism and authoritarianism under his rule.

The opposition promises change. He wants to repeat what has been achieved at the local level during the presidential and parliamentary elections, in two years at the latest. “There is no presidential system in Turkey. It’s the arbitrariness of one man. The government moves outside the constitution and the law, “said Mustafa Yeneroğlu, a member of the DEVA opposition party.

Opposition cooperation is not without problems

Yeneroğlu was an influential member of the AKP two years ago. He now coordinates the talks of six opposition parties across the political spectrum. By the end of the year, they want to have a list of common principles on the table. “The re-establishment of a parliamentary system is a motto that includes many aspects that will strengthen democracy in Turkey,” Yeneroğlu said.

But cooperation is not without problems. The negotiations are, at least for the time being, without the second largest opposition party – pro-Kurdish GDP. It bothers me that the nationalists represented in the opposition refuse to address the Kurdish issue. “We are open to a partnership on the presidential election, but we must discuss our demands with others in advance,” said opposition GDP MP Saruhan Oluç.

The AKP accuses the opposition of reactionaryism. According to her, the presidential system brought stability. According to surveys, more and more voters do not agree with this. Critics hope the one-man government will end like an amusement park.
