The Supreme Council of Turkish Radio and Television (RTK) to have you Spotify regulate its content in accordance with Turkish law or risk critical elements being deleted or cut.
RTK would consider removing or cutting any content deemed inappropriate – a term that is open to interpretation when applied to high profile, critical podcasts that attract large audiences.
Spotify was granted an operating license from Turkey for 10 years after applying on October 15. But its digital content is open to oversight by the country’s media regulator.
With this license granted, the platform must regulate its content in accordance with our laws.RTK chairman Ebubekir Şahin told pro-government newspaper Sabah.
Now “Spotify” will be able to operate in our country for a period of 10 years legally. Spotify must now adhere to the broadcast principles explicitly stated in Law # 6112. If they broadcast outside of that, we will do what is necessary as RTK , Şahin said.
Spotify offers relatively free space in a media environment in which nearly 90% of companies are linked to pro-government conglomerates.
Digital platforms are under the authority of RTK under a regulation that was passed on August 1, 2019. Broadcasting companies cannot operate without obtaining licenses from RTK as part of the amendment.
