Turkish journalist attacked near his home in Berlin

A Turkish journalist living in Germany was attacked by three men at his home in Berlin last night. They would have told him to stop writing. When other people arrived, the attackers fled, Berlin police said.

The victim, 48-year-old Erk Acarer, announced on Twitter last night from the hospital that he has suffered “swelling in his head”. He had to stay in the hospital for several hours for observation.

Acarer is a columnist for an independent Turkish newspaper. He is known as a critic of Turkish President Erdogan. He and other journalists face charges in Turkey for disclosing the activities of secret services. They wrote about the funeral of a Turkish secret agent who was murdered in Libya.

In a video, Acarer suggests that the attackers come from Islamist or fascist sources. He refers to Erdogan’s AK party and the right-wing nationalist MHP. He also says that he will never capitulate to fascism.
