Following the match played between MKE Ankaragücü and Çaykur Rizespor in the 15th week of the Trendyol Super League, it was announced that the leagues, which were postponed indefinitely after Faruk Koca’s attack on referee Halil Umut Meler, would start playing on December 19, and the referees made their final decision.

Following the events following the match between Ankaragücü and Çaykur Rizespor, the referees decided not to attend the matches. A meeting regarding this issue was held between the President of the Turkish Football Federation Mehmet Büyükekşi and the referees.

“WE HAVE DECIDED TO RETURN TO DUTY”

After the meeting, Super League, VAR, Super League Assistant Referees, Class A, Assistant Referees of Class A made a written statement that they would return to duty, with Halil Umut Meler calling for a ‘return’.

“As you know, after the final whistle of the MKE Ankaragücü – Çaykur Rizespor match played in Ankara on December 11, 2023, we made a joint decision after the disgusting incident that our friend Halil Umut Meler was exposed to and declared to the valuable public that we will not compete until our next statement. This is what happened. After the sad incident, all state bodies, especially our President, as well as the President of the Turkish Football Federation, Members of the Board of Directors, the President and Members of the Central Referee Board, took radical measures very quickly, and the grave incident and its perpetrators were dealt with very quickly and determinedly. In addition to organs, messages of sadness and support were published from all corners of the world, and the issue created a huge agenda for the whole world public opinion. Over the past days, the health condition of our friend Halil Umut Meler has also improved.

After all these developments, we wanted to meet with our President of the Turkish Football Federation, Mr. Mehmet Büyükekşi, to express our concerns and demands about the process that resulted in this attack. Our esteemed President has prepared the environment for a very transparent meeting with the participation of all Super League Referees, VAR Referees, Assistant Referees Representative and A Class Referees Representative.

In this meeting, we, as the Referees, expressed our concerns and demands to Mr. Mehmet Büyükekşi on the following topics:

– On-field and travel security

class=”cf”>

– TFF undertakes the legal and health needs of our referee friends, especially those at the lowest level, in possible cases of violence and assault.

class=”cf”>

– Making more deterrent arrangements in Disciplinary Instructions

Regarding these and similar issues, our President of the Turkish Football Federation expressed his opinion that the necessary work will be done immediately. Afterwards, we held meetings with our friend Halil Umut Meler, who is our priority, as we stated in our first statement.

Following the steps taken by the state levels, the Turkish Football Federation and the judicial authorities, which have reacted extremely quickly at the point we have reached within the framework of this entire calendar, we, as referees, have decided to return to our public duty in order for football life to return to its normal flow.

In addition, the camp/seminar that was planned to be held this weekend for the referees and whose families were said to attend was cancelled.
