At the last poll in 2018, 121,508 of the more than 260,000 voters in the Netherlands cast their votes in five days for the parliamentary and presidential elections in Turkey. That was a record number at the time. This year, it is expected that 56 percent of voters will vote, it appears research of the Clingendael Institute.
Five years ago, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received 72.8 percent of the vote in the Netherlands. His party AKP got 63 percent. Only in Belgium did the incumbent president receive a higher percentage of the vote (74.9 percent).
In the latest polls, Erdogan is trailing his main opponent. That is Kemal Kiliçdaroglu of opposition party CHP. Erdogan’s AKP is also on a loss, but is still on course to remain Turkey’s largest party. Whether the party can also retain the majority in parliament will depend on the MHP, the right-wing nationalist junior partner of the AKP. At the moment, the various opposition parties seem to have a majority.
