Turkish Airlines orders 220 planes from Airbus in multi-billion dollar deal

Turkish Airlines orders another 220 planes to try to take away further market shares on the continent from the companies in Europe, in particular on the intercontinental routes which are also the most profitable. Airbus confirms this in a note. While the airline, in a separate statement, adds that it has optioned another 125 jets as part of its 2023-2033 strategic plan.

The negotiations

After weeks of rumors and tight negotiations down to the last minute – in particular on discounts and delivery times – Turkey’s main carrier and the European aerospace giant Airbus have reached an agreement for the supply of at least 150 A321neo single) and 70 A350 (double aisle). Waiting for the discrepancy between the two announcements to be clarified.

The value

The 220 aircraft have a total list price of 41 billion dollars, according to Courier estimates, but with the reductions applied the outlay for Turkish Airlines should be around 17 billion, a figure which is also considered reliable by two experts in this type of transactions. Of the 70 double-aisle aircraft, 50 will be A350-900 and 15 A350-1000 for passenger transport, another 5 will be A350F, the version for the transport of goods, therefore without seats for travellers.

Features

The billion-dollar order comes – as an Airbus note recalls – after the carrier had placed an order for 10 A350-900s in September and another for four A350-900s in July 2023. “This latest order will bring the total of the portfolio Turkish orders for Airbus aircraft at 504, of which 212 have already been delivered”. Overall, requests — from all carriers — record 5,600 A321neos and 1,072 A350s, the majority of which will be delivered in the coming years.

The company numbers

According to data provided to the Courier by the specialized platform Ch-Aviation Turkish Airlines – of which the Turkish sovereign fund has 49% – currently uses 442 passenger planes, to which are added the 90 of the AnadoluJet division and the 22 aircraft only for cargo . In the first eleven months it transported 77.27 million passengers, up 16.6% compared to the same period in 2022, of which 28.31 million on domestic routes and 48.96 million on international routes. In the period January-September of this year, revenues amounted to 15.82 billion dollars with 2.79 billion in profits.
