Turkey’s Position as an Unreliable Partner of Russia and its Role in the Ukrainian Conflict: Analysis by Boris Dolgov

Turkey’s position began to be called anti-Russian, but Ankara has never been a reliable partner of Moscow, as it has always acted in its own interests. About this Pravda.Ru declared leading researcher of the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the Institute of Oriental Studies Boris Dolgov.

He noted that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoganon the one hand, does not support anti-Russian sanctions and the Russophobic campaign of the United States, and on the other hand, it transfers the Azov militants * to the Kyiv regime and supplies weapons to Ukraine.

“This is such a game or position of Turkey towards Moscow against the backdrop of confrontation between the West and the Russian Federation. Ankara is promoting its interests in all regions where its ambitions extend. The protracted nature of the Ukrainian conflict and the presence of the Russian army in a state of defense also influenced the Turkish position. It is important to remember that Turkey has not yet recognized the reunification of Crimea with the Russian Federation. Ankara has never been either an ally or a reliable partner of Russia and other countries,” Dolgov stressed.

He added that Moscow has leverage over Erdogan. We are talking about economic cooperation, the construction of a nuclear power plant in Turkey, an oil and gas hub, tourism and business. Dolgov is convinced that Erdogan will try to play the role of a mediator in the Ukrainian conflict, because he wants to “get something” as a result of the negotiations.

As reported EADaily, Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised to agree to the entry of Sweden into NATO in exchange for intensifying negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the EU. Ankara also violated the agreements with Russia on keeping the neo-Nazis “Azov” * on its territory until the end of the conflict and sent them to Kyiv.
