On Tuesday night (11/23/2021), protesters marched on the streets of Ankara’s Cankaya neighborhood, where most of Turkey’s government buildings and government institutions are located.
They chanted istifa (resign) and the name of Erdogan’s ruling party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP). Many blew whistles, banging on pots and pans to make noise.

The protests come amid an escalating crisis in the Turkish Lira, which has collapsed from $0.1 to $0.078 in value over the past week. This is the worst decline since 2018.

Erdogan has defended his government’s monetary policy, saying he will not get involved in, “The game played by those discussing currency, interest and price hikes, but will continue with the government’s economic plans.”
