The United States and several European countries have warned their citizens against attending large gatherings and asked them to avoid tourist attractions.
In the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s travel advice, Turks are warned against “dangerous levels of religious intolerance and hatred in Europe”. In a separate statement on Saturday, it says that there have been “recent verbal and physical attacks against foreigners and racist acts committed in the United States”.
The government in Turkey has reacted strongly to anti-Islam comments from the far-right activist Rasmus Paludan. He has set fire to the Koran outside the Turkish embassies in Stockholm and Copenhagen.
It has sparked demonstrations in Ankara and Istanbul and increased diplomatic tensions with Turkey, which has long refused to give the green light to Sweden’s Nato application.
The foreign ministries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark on Saturday urged their citizens in Turkey to avoid places with demonstrations and large gatherings of people.
