Turkish women’s volleyball team won the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League (VNL) 2023 after defeating China at College Park Center, Arlington, Texas, United States of America, Monday (17/7) morning WIB.
Türkiye won the first set after a tough duel. Melissa Teresa Vargas immediately played a central role for Türkiye, who won 25-22 in the first set.
In the second set China responded well to losing the opening set. Li Yingying showed a slick ability to score points while at the same time bothering Turkey in the second set. China won 25-22 in the second set.
After the score was tied, the Türkiye vs China duel took place tough in the third set. Türkiye slowly appeared more solid in attack and defense.
Vargas’ expertise was matched by the performances of Dundar Erdem and Erbar Karakurt. Meanwhile, Yingying’s role was suppressed by Türkiye, which then won 25-19.
Entering the fourth set, Türkiye’s explosive power seemed unstoppable. On the other hand, China failed to rise. Vargas is still the engine of the Turkish attack, balanced by Zehra Gunes who is an alternative to the Turkish attack.
The mistakes made by China also made Turkey closer to the point of victory. A block by a Turkish player made it impossible for China to return the ball so the score was 25-15.
This is the first time Türkiye has won. Previously, Türkiye’s best achievement was being runner up in the first VNL event which took place in 2018.
For China, finalist status is also the best achievement after only being in third place in 2018 and 2019. The third place in the 2023 VNL event is Poland, which beat the United States.
